A Very New York Engagement

Head to Toe: Dress, thrifted // Booties, J Shoes // Scarf, Lilysilk // Bracelets, The Paris Bracelet

I am super excited to share Sean and my engagement photos! A friend and very talented photographer Trevett McCandliss took them in DUMBO, Brooklyn, and we got some seriously gorgeous golden hour lighting just as the sun was setting over the city. I kept the outfit neutral and let the focus be on us. Heeled booties, though not in many of the photos, turned out to be a great choice considering Sean is nearly a foot taller than me. It helped close the gap! Just looking at these makes me smile. I seriously cannot wait to marry this just over six months, eek!

Fashion Week Outtakes

Fashion Week has come and gone, but I wanted to share one last post with some snapshots I wasn't able to publish on the blog. You may recognize a few from my Insta stories, like my spotting of Paris and Nicky or time backstage at Bibhu Mohapatra and Marcel Ostertag. It was an awesome experience, but I'm happy to follow the European shows from my couch on Instagram!

Pattern Mixing For Fall

Head to Toe: Dress, Kmart // Skirt, Thrifted // Booties, Seychelles // Flaca Jewelry // Beret, street vendor // Socks, Marcmarcs

I've always subscribed to the maxim that it's not how expensive something is, but how you wear it. And if you want proof of that, it's this outfit. This flannel tunic is from Kmart—I needed an impromptu change last year and snagged it on clearance across the street from my job for $10—and I always get compliments on it. So for fashion week, I figured why not go skirt-over-dress and pattern-on-pattern? Oddly enough, it all kind of worked. I got stopped by more street photographers wearing this than any other day, and I had to laugh and keep myself from saying, "Thanks, it's house of Kmart."

Shoulder Pads For The Win

Head to Toe: Blouse, skirt and bag, thrifted // Shoes, Musse & Cloud // Tights and Socks, Marcmarcs // Phone case, Yeah Bunny // Earrings, FLACA Jewelry

I found this blouse in a Salvation Army while we were in Virginia shopping for centerpiece vases. Instantly, my mind went: "It's horrible, it's wonderful, I need it." My mind also went to this blue leather skirt, also a vintage thrift find. My vision, apparently, was pretty on point with the '80s revival that's been all over the Spring runways. Thanks, Tom Ford, for making these shoulder pads appropriate again. Because fem-power, amiright?
Thanks to my lovely fiancĂ©  for standing in the middle of the street with me to take these photos. That's love.
PS: If you're recovering from Fashion Week sleep deprivation, silk sleep masks are free today on Lilysilk!

Box Braids and Block Heels

Head to Toe: Crop top and slacks, made by mom // Jacket, Buffalo Exchange // Boots, Musse & Cloud // Bag, Vintage // Earrings, Forever 21

I always get a ton of compliments when I wear my hair in these braids, but the truth is, I'm usually rocking them because I haven't washed my hair. And the only reason I do the trendy "box braid" style is because I don't know how to do a regular French braid. (Growing up left handed, I often find myself doing things a little backwards from the way I've been taught.) Still, the braids came in clutch Saturday morning, when I overslept—Saturday, 'nuff said—for a morning show. They delivered, as always, and someone from TresemmĂ© even asked if they could take my picture. Who knows if it will actually get used anywhere, but a cool moment nonetheless. But I guess the point of my rant here is returning to my earlier sentiment that we're all just faking it, yanno?

Fashion Week Day II: The Carrie Skirt

Head to Toe: Blouse, skirt and scarf; thrifted // Sneakers, Keds // Bag, Cole Haan

Fashion week—you know you're doing it right when people give you weird looks on the subway. I found this ASOS skirt in a Salvation Army last fall and grabbed it up for $8. I fondly refer to it as my Carrie Bradshaw skirt but haven't actually worn it yet because it's so, well, extra. Being extra at fashion shows is totally permitted, if not encouraged, but it's getting to and from said shows that prompts some sideways glances. But, it's New York, so there's always someone who's more weird and outlandish than you, so I just own it.

I Wore a $2 Outfit to Fashion Week

Head to Toe: Skirt and blouse, Robert Rodriguez via Buffalo Exchange // Sweatshirt, Juicy Couture // Sandals, Shellys // Choker, The Paris Bracelet
My motto for fashion week: Fake it till ya make it. The people watching is my favorite part of the event, spotting successful bloggers alongside fashion students who sewed their own outfits. It runs the gamut, for sure.

But between fashion editors who pull clothing from leading designers to bloggers who are gifted an entire wardrobe, it can be tough to keep up with the Joneses. So my M.O. is to just have fun with it. I scored this Robert Rodriguez set at the Buffalo Exchange $1 sale this past April and haven't had an opportunity to wear it yet. It was a bit chilly this morning so I decided to go high-low and throw on a velour hoodie. Because if there's ever a time to experiment, it's fashion week, where the rules are made up and the points don't matter. (Any other Who's Line fans in the house?)

I made a misstep, however, with my choice in footwear. While these mules are adorable, they absolutely destroyed my feet. Seriously, RIP to the skin on my big toe. I had to make a stop in Duane Reade to get a box of Bandaids and little black socks to make it through the rest of the day, albeit difficultly. As if I needed an additional reminder that I am one of the normals—the fashion elite doesn't have this problem, of course, since they take cabs from show to show. At least they looked cute for the photos, amiright?

Last Shot at Summer

Head to Toe: Top and jeans, thrifted // Sandals, Pikolinos // Scarf, Lilysilk // Bag, Vera Bradley

Hello, fashionistas! Happy September...August has come and gone and I've been pretty MIA on the blog. I have to admit, I've been having this feeling that life is getting away from me a little bit. This summer was pretty jam packed: I moved, started a new job and got engaged! Woah, I mean those are the big three right there. Wasn't it Carrie Bradshaw who said that in New York, you're always looking for a job, a boyfriend or an apartment? So while I am beyond thrilled that all of these amazing things are falling into place for me, all of the change has left me feeling a little jet lagged.
And then, there's physical jet lag from a busy end of summer. I spent the last weekend of July in Rhode Island with girlfriends, headed to Virginia for vacation the following week, and then went straight to Vegas for a work trip. Since I've been home, I have to admit, I haven't felt motivated to do a ton outside of work. I've slacked on my gym membership, haven't been cooking and have been throwing on the easiest thing in my closet to wear to work. While all of these things give me joy, sometimes it just feels like something has to give, you know? While I know I'll feel better if I make time for the gym, sometimes I just want to sit on my couch with my pups and watch Law & Order reruns over takeout food.
In NYC, there's underlying feeling of "competition" to  be the busiest, to pack the most into your life. And that hustle is part of why I love the city, but most of the time, it's not a competition I want to win. Nor could I! I'm in awe of how much the women around me are juggling—many of my friends have multiple jobs (or just super long hours at their full-time job), children, or are going back to school, or some combination of all those things! Is there ever a time when things slow down?
And maybe that's what has had me feeling so out of whack lately—the fact that another summer is in the books, another new school year underway, and as always, it snuck up quickly. Every year, I seem to feel this back-to-school anxiety. In many ways, it feels like a chance to shed the indulgences of summer and get back on track. September always feels like an new year to me more than January. Plus pumpkin everything, amiright?
For sure, fall has always had a special place in my heart. August 30 was actually my sixth blog-versary. I'm trying to think back to how I felt then, but perhaps it was this same restlessness that prompted me to start this blog, at the turn of a season and start of my last school year. So that's what I want to do now—harness that anxious energy for good. That means you'll be seeing more of me on here (although I'll forgive myself if it isn't as often as I'd like). And with fashion week coming up, there will be tons of new inspiration and creativity circulating. I can't wait to see what all my fellow blogger babes will be wearing! Until then, thanks for being a part of my journey these past six years, and for sticking with me even when real life gets in the way.
